If you’re planning a Sandals vacation, it probably feels pretty straightforward in the beginning. Maybe you’ll look at a few of the top-ranked resorts, compare some photos, and even watch a bunch of YouTube videos, maybe even ours! 🙂
Then you’ll pick a room from the edited photos that look nice, and move forward with booking.
That’s exactly how most people start, and that is exactly where we started before ever using a Sandals travel agent.
But, honestly, on the surface, although it should be that simple, it isn’t, and we found out on our first stay because we didn’t use a Sandals travel agent.
So today, we’re going to share our experience to help you get the most out of your upcoming getaway. After doing this for more than 15 years and helping thousands of clients plan their trips, we can tell you this is where things can start to go wrong.
Not because people choose a bad resort. Sandals doesn’t have “bad” resorts. But because they chose the wrong experience within that resort.
And that’s the part nobody really explains when you’re booking on your own.

“Sandals doesn’t have 'bad' resorts, but we hear from people who didn't use an expert that they chose the wrong experience within that resort.”
Hi! We’re Jonathan and Angela, founders of Best Caribbean Resorts (BCR), our Sandals-centric travel site.
As Sandals Chairman’s Royal Club Diamond Elite travel specialists, many of our clients book through our advisory brand, Rivage Travel, which is the same team, the same experience.
We’ve stayed at every Sandals resort, we’ve been recognized as Sandals Top US agency, and we’re going to help you understand what’s included, who gets the most value, which resorts consistently deliver on the experience, and why you should consider using a Sandals specialist for your next Sandals or Beaches resorts getaway.
At its core, a Certified Sandals Specialist is someone who has completed official online training with Sandals and understands how its resorts, room categories, and booking systems work.
But if we’re being completely honest, that alone shouldn’t mean much to most.
Let me explain why…
Through the Certified Sandals Specialist training, travel agents will learn a lot, but you don’t really understand a resort until you’ve actually been there, and we’ve been to every Sandals resort, more than once!
Yes, it’s exciting… but we also take it seriously, because we have a real commitment to our clients.
And with Sandals, there are different tiers of recognition that only a select number of advisors receive. In short, booking with one who has the Sandals Chairman’s Royal Club designation signifies they’re amongst the most accomplished advisors in the United States.
Inside that recognition are 3 tiers in total…
At Best Caribbean Resorts, we’re proud to have been recognized as a Sandals Chairman’s Royal Club Diamond Elite travel expert for the past four consecutive years, most recently receiving it for 2026. Putting us squarely in the top .05% of all travel advisors in the United States.
To give you a better sense of what our clients actually experience, we wanted to share a few of their testimonials with you from our Google Business Profile:
“Jonathan at Rivage was outstanding! We had a group of 10 travelers, and he took care of all the details for us for all the rooms and arrangements, and went out of his way to answer all our questions and special asks of the resort (around diving, group dining, etc). He was always quick to respond and reached out proactively to remind us of to-do and fun items. His insider knowledge from having been at the resort personally was also helpful! He made our trip easy and stress free. 100% recommend, and we will definitely use Rivage Travel again for any other Sandals/Beaches vacations.”
This is how Michelle S. described her experience.
And here’s what Steve Frost shared after his trip:
“Working with Jonathan at Rivage Travel was great. He made the entire trip easy and effortless. Jonathan was equally amazing on our last trip to Sandals St. Lucia last year, too. We’re now completely sold on Sandals Resorts, thanks to the impeccable planning and service provided by Rivage Travel and Jonathan.”
Angela and I have personally been to every Sandals and Beaches resort in the Caribbean. Not just quick visits, we’ve stayed at the resorts, eaten at the restaurants, seen the rooms, built personal relationships with the management teams, and paid attention to how each property actually feels.
And over time, you start to see some things…
One of the biggest ones is this:
Two couples can go to the same resort, at the same time, spend roughly the same amount of money… and come home with completely different opinions of the trip.
We’ve seen it happen more times than we can count.
One couple says, “That was the best trip we’ve ever taken.”
The other says, “It was good… but not what we expected.”
Same resort… The difference is almost always the details, room location, layout, timing, and how everything comes together.
And those are the things that are hardest to figure out on your own.
There are a handful of mistakes that come up again and again, and they’re not completely obvious unless you’ve seen them play out in real life.
The first one is choosing a resort based on how it looks on TV or online. Some resorts are designed to be more relaxed and spread out. Others are more social, with a lot going on throughout the day. Neither is better; it just depends on what you’re looking for.
But if you pick the wrong one for your interests, the entire trip can seem like something was missing.
The second mistake is assuming that a higher room category, like Club or Butler level, automatically means a better experience. While there is some truth there, that’s probably the biggest misconception we run into.
There are plenty of cases where a slightly lower-category room, in the right location, ends up being a better overall experience than a more expensive option in a less-ideal spot.
We’ll use the TPR (Tropical Premium) Sandals Luxury level room category at Sandals Grande St. Lucian as our primary example. This resort is situated between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, with luxury-level ocean views on both sides. When comparing costs between Club and Luxury level rooms, it could be cost preventative for Club Level, so you might be looking at Sandals Luxury Level only.
When considering those options, if you go solely by what is available online, you might end up with an oceanview room, but you’re looking at the main road coming into the resort and missing those epic Caribbean views.
As your advisors, we listen to your interests and guide you toward the best option, such as the TPR.
Then there’s the layout issue. This is something people really underestimate. A resort may look compact on a map, but in reality, it could be a 10–15 minute walk from certain rooms to the beach or main areas. Or you could be placed right next to an entertainment space when you were hoping for something more remote.
And finally, timing. This is a big one. Pricing, availability, and even the overall experience can change depending on when you book and when you travel. Promotions come and go, renovations happen, and resort vibes change depending on the time of year you’re traveling.
Lastly, in our experience, roughly 3 in 10 clients who come to us after booking elsewhere on their own tell us they wish they’d chosen a different room location, not a different resort, just a different room. The resort was fine. The placement wasn’t. We want to make that 0 in 10!
What we do isn’t just about making a reservation.
It’s about helping you avoid all of those small decisions that can quietly impact your trip in a big way.
When we start working with you, we’re not just asking, “Which resort do you want?” We’re asking questions about what kind of experience you’re actually looking for. Do you want something quiet or more social? Do you care more about the beach or the room? Is this a special occasion, like a honeymoon, or just time away?
From there, we guide you toward options that actually fit, not just ones that look good.
And then we get into the details. Which rooms make sense? Which ones don’t? What timing works best? What to expect when you get there.
It’s not complicated, but it is very specific and personal to us that we help you make the right decision.
Best of all, we’re the only Sandals specialist travel agency with a proprietary service called APEX, our Sandals 777 price-monitoring system. When you book with us, we monitor your reservation against the Sandals weekly 777 promotion, and if your booking becomes eligible, we reprice your reservation and notify you of the savings.
We’re proud to be the only ones offering this service, and it’s 100% complimentary for our amazing clients.
One trip that’s always stuck with me was a couple who came to us after going through a really difficult time. They had gotten married but never had the chance to go on a honeymoon.
When they reached out, they didn’t have a specific resort in mind. They just said they wanted something special.
We spent time talking through what that actually meant, not just which resort to visit, but what they wanted from their time away. We ended up recommending an over-the-water bungalow at Sandals South Coast and worked directly with the resort team ahead of their arrival to make sure everything was set up the right way.
When they came back, they told us it was amazing.
For them, it wasn’t just a getaway. Our clients said it was the life reset they needed, memorable and one they’d remember for years to come.
For us, that’s the difference the right planning can make and an example of how much pride we take in our work.
There’s a limit to what you can learn from reviews, ChatGPT, and photos.
What you won’t find is the information that comes from actually being there. Which buildings are more private? Which views are worth it? Which upgrades should be considered and which ones really aren’t?
And lately, this has become even more important with the shift toward what Sandals is calling 2.0.
Some resorts have already been fully updated with a more modern Sandals 2.0 design, while others are in progress. On paper, they look similar but can be very different, and the photos are not always up to date.
Knowing that ahead of time can change everything about what to expect upon arrival.
This is something we explain almost every day.
A lot of people assume that working with a Sandals travel specialist means paying extra, but that’s not how it works, especially with us. In all cases, you’re paying the same price you would if you booked directly, and sometimes even less, especially when using all available offers.
We don’t charge planning fees and never will.
Our goal is to build long-term relationships with our clients, and the way we do that is by helping them have a great experience the first time. When that happens, they come back to us for future trips.
So for us, it’s about getting it right, not adding extra cost.
Over the years, we’ve had the opportunity to work with so many different types of clients, from honeymoons and anniversaries to group trips, life resets, and everything in between.
And honestly, hearing how those trips turned out is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do. It’s very special for us to turn planning a trip into an experience that you’ll remember for the rest of your life.
We take that responsibility seriously and will always look after you, our client…
Working with a Certified Sandals Specialist and specifically one of the highest qualified agents with a Sandals Chairman’s Royal Club (CRC) designation makes the biggest difference.
If you want to make sure you’ve picked the right resort, the right room, and have the right timing (hurricane vs. non-hurricane season)… it helps to have someone guide you through that.
If you’re more flexible, enjoy figuring things out on your own, and don’t mind a bit of trial and error along the way, you can absolutely book it yourself.
There’s no wrong approach.
But most of the people who come to us do so because they don’t want to second-guess their decision after they arrive.
At the end of the day, a Sandals vacation is a big investment. You’re booking a luxury resort stay AND an experience you’ve probably been looking forward to for months, sometimes years.
And when everything comes together the way it should, it’s incredible. That’s why having the right people in your corner from the beginning is so important.
If you want to make sure the resort, room, and timing are right before you commit, not after you arrive, that’s exactly what we do. No planning fees, no pressure. Let’s talk!
From choosing the right resort to picking the right room and timing everything correctly, we’ll walk you through it so you can move forward with full confidence in your final decision.
And the best part is, we do all of that at no cost to you.
If you’re ready to start planning—or even if you just want a second opinion—we’re always happy to help.

At Best Caribbean Resorts, we’re more than travel advisors.
